Depends on what mood I'm in. Love my acid lines, probably why I'm such a fan of lost soul. Having said that I don't mind some uplifting trancey stuff, especially in the middle of the set. The kick I can give or take, as long as it suits the track. Like my big kicks towards the end, when I mix I tend to end with a bit of gabber, and the big kick stuff mixes into gabber really well.

its got to be driving, and it needs to keep going and going, plenty of little key changes are a winner too, acid is a must, i think the one person who has got everything required in most of his tunes is alek szahala

Contrast.

Freeform for me is all about the contrast between euphoric melodies and dirty dirty filth Wink Take Frozen Flame - RX for instance. My favorite Freeform tune to date (also still my favourite producer). This track identifies EXACTLY what i love in freeform. The dirty gritty-ness of the synths, the rumbling fast passed basslines and the most gorgeous melody to top it all off. Perfection imo Smile

Oh and a fat key change (Cheers Sam).

Just like the one on the second breakdown of Eternal Cannon - RR & Thermal Force.

That keychange pretty much made me cry the first few times i heard it....

Its hard to explain what it is about freeform that I love. Kev Energy's stuff the past 2 years has been unreal. "Fuckin Rockin It" and "OOh Naa Nee Nah Noo" were so remarkable in the production and melodic style. Tracks like those are hard to find, and will be harder to find with KE gone.

I'm also keeping an eye on Douglas. I fell in love with the Solas An Lae remix on his page, and enjoyed elements of the Techno Club. The breakdowns just exemplify the attention to detail in the tracks.

for me, I like dirty basslines, heavy acid synths and epic melodic breakdowns. I like the complexity and depth that most of todays hardcore cannot supply.

to answer the question "what makes a good freeform record?" my answer would have to be: good producers that think outside the box and dont subscribe to a cookie cutter image of what music should be.

my 2 cents Very Happy

In my opinion really deep energic melodies (main thing Very Happy ), some nice gated fx lines for intro and outro (spiced with flanger, phaser, distortion...), I also like when a track sticks with one atmosphere (hard, melaholic, happy, whatever).
That pretty much is a recepie I use.

I'm personally a big fan of insane FINRG style high passed saws and tear your face off acid lines! The melancholy and sci/fi vibe is also something that really appeals to me which is also why I'm listening to a lot of neurofunk at the moment

What makes a good Freeform record? Empty Re: What makes a good Freeform record?

Freeform to me is making hardcore that isn’t what is being done in the main thread of UK Hardcore. When I got into freeform/trancecore most of the djs were playing happy/sing-along happy hardcore and freeform sounded different taking elements from acid techno, hard trance, gabber, and drum&bass.

To a point, I feel that freeform hasn’t progressed much in the past ten years because UK hardcore moved toward fast trance riffs as well. Still, I do enjoy a lot of the newer "freeform" tunes and think that a lot of the newer stuff is quite good.

I think my favorite elements of freeform are what some people call “Big Kick”. Tracks that really add a sense of insanity or chaos to a set. Some tunes that come to mind include:

Wicked MC (AMS Remix) – CLSM & Sharkey
Letting Go – Arkitech
Oiii! – Darwin & Obie
Secret Passageway – Firefly
Reform Your Freeform – AB & Kevin Energy
Where’s the Party At? – Sharkey & Robbie Long
Marc Smith – Too Many tunes to list Very Happy

I agree with you about hardcore being driven by trancey riffs from sorta 2001 -> Onwards.

But not progressing much? I feel you need to look a bit further afield. Freeform is very much a world wide thing, as small and niche-y as it is, Freeform from Finland for instance - Very very different to the hardcore based freeform we have in the UK. Their freeform is much more Psybased. This comes from the popularity of a genre called 'Suomisaundi'. If you listen to Japanese Freeform, its much more like Trance based Hard NRG, crazy riffs and loads of energy. European stuff tends to be more Trance based...

Also, progression in a style of music can only come from the input of the producers. UK Freeform is geared a whole lot more towards the hardcore scene. If the same producers are producing the same shit year in year out *cough*KEVIN ENERGY*cough* then a scene isn't going to progress. If you take a genre like Dubstep for instance, fuck loads of producers putting out fuck loads of different stuff every week. Then it's *IS* and *HAS* progressed alot faster... Simply due to the popularity of the genre and the amount of producers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Without fresh infusions of influence from different producers, the scene aint going to progress much. The UK scene is a big example of this. Look at the Finnish scene, MASSIVE changes and masses of different styles, their style has changed conciderably over the last 5 years...

Ideally it's a little bit of everything, whether spread out over a whole mix or concentrated in one track.

I appreciate your passion but I stand by what I stated.

I have listened to what would be considered freeform from other countries. I have even traveled to Japan to check out the J-Core scene (a must for anyone who can make it to that side of the world) and I still believe that until freeform gets rid of its reliance on trance riffs it will not be able to more forward.

Mind you I could say that with most of the UK hardcore made in the past ten years. Laughing

Freeform is a melody driven genre. How would you suggest it progresses onwards? There aint much in the way of 'other' stuff.

You could either go the way of House and make it bleepy and slightly more bassline orientated, but that would make it alot more minimal. Have you heard minimal music at 175? It's disgusting.

The only other way to go would be to make it a bassline orientated genre, which would basically mean it would either become D&B or Speed Garage. 4/4 beats with bassline orientation is boring as fuck., imo.

When it comes down to it, there are three styles of Electronic Dance Music. House, Trance, Breakbeat.

Without influence, it aint going to progress. If you don't like the way it is or feel it isn't progressing far/fast enough, i suggest you start influencing the scene with your own music and style. If people like it, it will be absorbed and replicated, in the way that Dance music genres evolve.
